Dental Sealants are a plastic coating that are placed on teeth after they erupt. This is done to help protect the teeth from cavities by filling in the pits and fissure on the chewing surfaces that attract plaque. Sealants are most effective when they are placed as soon as the tooth erupts.

How are sealants placed?

  • The tooth is first cleaned of any plaque or food residue
  • The surface is then etched, rinsed and dried
  • Finally the sealant material is brushed onto the grooves and cured with a curing light

What teeth are dental sealants placed on and when should teeth be sealed?

  • Sealants are placed on the adult first molars or any teeth that have deep pit and fissures.
  • We look at the dental history of the patient and assess the risk to decide if teeth should be sealed

How long do sealants last?

  • Sealants can last for many years, however they need to be checked from time to time to see if they are wearing down or chipping.

Do I still need fluoride if I have sealants?

  • Yes, sealants only cover the chewing surface of the molars. Fluoride is applied to all surfaces of the teeth
